Top-10 Thursday: Romantic Dramas

These aren't necessarily sweet romantic stories. That's a warning for those wondering why something like, I don't know, When Harry Met Sally isn't on the list. That's a romantic comedy. These are dramas. Do you have your own favorites?

-

10. Garden State - It's also a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I love this movie. Interestingly, the soundtrack for it became the universal study music for everyone I knew during my freshman year of college. Jude Seymour (All Politics is Local) says this movie started a trend he hates: Long music interludes of indie bands no one has heard of before the movie. (Juno and 500 Days of Summer are recent examples).

-

9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - My dad always said a great movie is one that you can watch over and over again and still notice something new. That's exactly the case with this one.

-

8. The Cooler - Absolutely brilliant. Considering this is only No. 8, you can bet there are some good ones ahead.

-

7. The Piano - An actress (Holly Hunter) won an Academy Award without speaking a word. Another actress (Anna Paquin) became the youngest Academy Award winner at age 11.

-

6. Forrest Gump - Entertaining and won the Best Picture Oscar in 1994. It beat out Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption that year.

-

5. Lost in Translation - This one might not fit for you, but it is one of my personal favorites. It won Best Writing and Bill Murray was nominated for Best Actor.

-

4. Slumdog Millionaire - At the heart of it, it's a love story, so don't raise your eyebrows at me.

-

3. The Graduate - Yet another classic. It was nominated for seven Oscars, and won one for Best Director (Mike Nichols).

-

2. Casablanca - The one that started the genre.

-

1. American Beauty - This movie is perfect.
