Fort Drum soldier killed by IED in Afghanistan

FORT DRUM — A soldier with the 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Division was killed Thursday in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, according to a division press release.

Pfc. Jeremiah J. Monroe, 31, of Niskayuna, served as a combat engineer with the 630th Engineer Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade. He is survived by his wife, daughter, brother and mother.

Pfc. Monroe joined the Army in March 2008 and arrived at Fort Drum in July 2008. He deployed in July. This was his first deployment.

Pfc. Monroe's military awards include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.

Gov. David A. Peterson announced Monday that he is ordering flags to be flown at half staff at state buildings Wednesday to honor Pfc. Monroe.
