OGDENSBURG — One of the two suspects in a $220,000 home safe burglary last summer in Ogdensburg has asked for a preliminary hearing in City Court.
Brent L. St. Germain, 23, of 109 Grove St., was back in City Court on Tuesday before Judge George E. Silver. Represented by the St. Lawrence County conflict defender's office, he has been scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 14.
Mr. St. Germain was arrested Aug. 26 on a charge of second-degree burglary. He was accused in the July theft of two safes containing $220,000 in cash from the home of Hazel P. Lumbard, 1108 S. Water St.
The other suspect in the safe burglary, John C. Macullen Borasky, 19, of 1106 Washington St., was arrested by Ogdensburg police Aug. 3. He also was charged with second-degree burglary and was released to the supervision of probation. His legal counsel is the St. Lawrence County public defender's office.
Mr. Borasky has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. As a result, his case will be heard by a St. Lawrence County grand jury in Canton.
Mr. St. Germain initially was jailed at the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $100,000 bail or $200,000 bond. Earlier this month, his attorney, Judge Silver and the St. Lawrence County district attorney's office reached an agreement for him to be released to the supervision of probation and placed on electronic home monitoring.
The stolen cash was rent money collected by Mrs. Lumbard, a landlady who owns several residential properties in Ogdensburg.
When police arrested Mr. Borasky, they recovered $32,000 of the missing cash. The police investigation is continuing.
