HANNAWA FALLS — Harrisville Central School District Superintendent Rolf A. Waters was charged Saturday with driving while intoxicated.

Mr. Waters, 48, of 418 Meade Road, Canton, was stopped on Butternut Ridge Road in the town of Pierrepont, St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies said. His blood alcohol content was 0.14 percent.

State law establishes 0.08 percent BAC as the threshold for intoxication. He was issued an appearance ticket for Oct. 7 in Pierrepont Town Court.

Mr. Waters was high school principal in the Clifton-Fine Central School District until becoming Harrisville superintendent in July 2003. He also serves as Harrisville's elementary principal.

"It's an unfortunate thing," Harrisville school board member Joseph C. "Chuck" Langs said.

No actions have been taken, but a special board meeting is expected to be called soon to discuss the matter, likely in closed session, he said. The next regular school board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 13.

Mr. Langs said that Mr. Waters called him and his fellow board members over the weekend to notify them of the charge. Mr. Waters remains in charge of the district.

Mr. Waters didn't return a call left at school Tuesday. His home telephone line was disconnected.

Times staff writer Steve Virkler contributed to this report.
