Woman accused of lying
that man stole from her
A Black River woman faces prosecution on allegations that she falsely accused a man of stealing from her, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
Linda A. Campbell, 63, of 107 W. Remington St., was charged Tuesday with falsely reporting an incident.
Deputies allege that on July 25, and again on Sept. 19, Ms. Campbell gave statements in which she reported that David W. Smith, 45, Carthage, had stolen money from her account. Deputies during their investigation were able to view a security video at Walmart, outer Arsenal Street, in which Ms. Campbell is seen filling out documents to issue a moneygram for $700, plus $45.84 in fees, to Mr. Smith, according to the sheriff's office.
Her accusation against Mr. Smith could have been particularly troublesome for him because he was convicted of petit larceny early in 2008 for using her debit card to steal $2,200. He was sentenced to probation, and was cited in January with violating probation for not complying with a court order.
