Video reviews worked out the right way twice for Michigan State Saturday as the Spartans concluded a two-game, nonconference sweep of Clarkson with a 4-3 win.
The game-winning goal came from Chris Forfar with 2 minutes, 49 seconds left in the game. It was waved off by an on-ice official, who thought Forfar's stick was high.
But a video review showed that his stick was below the crossbar and the goal was allowed.
Clarkson coach George Roll said he will wait until he gets a look at the video to pass judgement.
Clarkson (0-2) had a goal from Adam Pawlick waved off in the second period after officials determined it was directed in with a glove. A review of that play confirmed the decision.
Despite the loss, Clarkson played much better in Saturday's game than it did in a 6-1 loss to the Spartans on Friday night.
Defenseman Mark Borowiecki gave the Golden Knights an early lead with a slap shot goal at 1:49 of the first period.
After MSU (2-0) tied the game with a power-play goal from Nick Sucharski, Clarkson answered with a power-play goal from Louke Oakley, on a slap shot from the right circle at 14:29, to take a 2-1 lead after one period.
But just like Friday, Clarkson struggled in the second period. The Spartans took a 3-2 lead after Derek Grant scored a power-play goal at 3:25 and Daultan Leveille added another goal at 9:36.
Further frustrating Clarkson was the fact that the Golden Knights went scoreless on five power-play chances during the second period and finished 1 for 9. Clarkson went just 2 for 15 on the power play in the series and allowed five power-play goals to the Spartans.
"I think what happened was our guys got worn out," Roll said of the second period. "We shortened the bench up front out and on the blue line. We would have liked to have played a little more five-on-five hockey."
Senior Matt Beca scored his second goal of the weekend at 7:31 of the third period to tie the game, with the goal coming just seconds after a Clarkson power play had expired. Scott Freeman and Brandon DeFazio assisted.
Despite the 0-2 start, Roll took some positives away from the trip.
"I thought Oakley and Freeman were outstanding," Roll said. "I thought Oaks had an unbelievable weekend. Corey Tamblyn is a different player than last year. (Bryan Rufenach and Mark Borowiecki) were outstanding. Rufenach was very good at both ends tonight, winning battles. Our team was a much different team tonight than last night."
