I was extremely fortunate a few weeks ago to be able to attend my third Rachel's Challenge assembly that was held, this time at Jefferson Community College and to hear for the first time the founder and father of Rachel: Darrell Scott. He spoke to hundreds of area community members and told the story of Rachel, the first student killed in the Columbine High School shooting 10 years ago.

I have been involved with Rachel's Challenge for a few years, and I know the impact that small acts of kindness have on individuals. The program was brought to Sackets Harbor last year, and Superintendent Frederick Hall and PTO president Sheri Hermann should be commended.

This program is one of the most profound, passionate and powerful programs that everyone should attend. Students from several school districts in the area were there, and hats off to those administrators who gave their students extra credit to entice them into attending.

Mr. Scott was without a doubt the best Rachel's Challenge speaker that they have had, and big kudos to JCC for bringing him here to share his story of his caring and compassionate daughter who lost her life by stupidity and prejudices that circulate our schools and communities. The auditorium was packed, and people heard the story, as well as what the program can do.

Now is the time for everyone to follow through on accepting Rachel's Challenge. Log on to www.rachelschallenge.com and see what you can do in your home, school or community and change lives.
