U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Fla., are coming Saturday morning to Phoebe's Restaurant in Canton in support of Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence parties candidate for the 23rd Congressional District.

The event is currently slated for 8:15 a.m., according to Scozzafava's campaign.

Ms. Collins will be in town to speak at the inauguration of William L. Fox, St. Lawrence University's new president. The Maine senator is a 1975 graduate of the university and Mr. Fox's former classmate.

She is the ranking member and former chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee, and is also a member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Mrs. Brown-Waite, an Albany native, is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. She is a 1976 graduate of Empire State College, Saratoga Springs.

As counterparts, Ms. Brown-Waite and Ms. Collins are on different sides of some of the issues that have become part of the campaign discourse.

Mrs. Brown-Waite is anti-abortion, against same-sex marriage, voted against the federal bailout of the auto industry and financial institutions and opposes gun control, according to On the Issues. The Florida lawmaker has an 84.5 lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union.

Ms. Collins hasn't fared as well, scoring a 49.5 from the same group. She's a supporter of abortion rights, for same-sex marriage, for the stimulus bill, and was rated B+ by the National Rifle Association.
