WASHINGTON — Groups outside of the north country poured almost $390,000 into the race for the 23rd Congressional District Monday and Tuesday, as the campaign gained national attention entering its final week.
None of that money was spent to promote the Republican candidate, Dierdre K. Scozzafava, further feeding the perception that her campaign is losing steam to Douglas L. Hoffman’s surge of support from prominent conservatives outside the region.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees reported spending $199,850 on advertising to attack Mr. Hoffman, the Conservative Party nominee. But AFSCME has not endorsed a candidate, a spokeswoman said.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent $122,377 on advertising for Democrat William L. Owens and $45,115 to attack Mr. Hoffman. The National Republican Congressional Committee, which backs Ms. Scozzafava, spent $41,600 on advertising against Mr. Owens.
The National Republican Trust political action committee spent $10,750 on Mr. Hoffman’s behalf. The Susan B. Anthony List Inc., which supports conservative candidates, spent $10,834 and the Club for Growth spent $1,186 for Mr. Hoffman.
