Five Lewis County towns will have contested supervisor races in Tuesday's general election.
In Croghan, Democrat Andrew A. Lehman and Republican David C. Zehr are vying for the supervisor spot being vacated by John G. Jones. Republican Councilman Bernard "Chip" Monnat, Republican John A. Farney and Independence Party and independent candidate Allen Merrill are running for two seats on the Town Council.
In Lyonsdale, Supervisor Roscoe J. Fawcett Jr., who holds the Republican and Independence party lines and an independent line, is being challenged by former Supervisor Samuel A. Marmon, who holds an independent line.
Democrat Matthew J. Farr, Republican, and independent candidates Theodore Mooney and Charles A. Kraeger Jr. are all seeking the highway superintendent position being vacated by Fred Rocker Jr. And Democratic Councilman Kenneth L. Mooney and Republican Councilwoman Nancy O'Brien-Dailey are also being challenged by Republican William L. Marmon.
In Montague, Democratic Supervisor Jan Bogdanowicz is being challenged by independent candidate Scott Shattuck. And Republican Highway Superintendent Adrian F. Perry, also running on an independent line, is being challenged by independent candidate Sidney J. Goutermout.
In New Bremen, Republican Supervisor Frederick J. Schneider, also running on the Independence Party line, is being challenged by Democrat Peter J. Keys.
And in Osceola, Supervisor Julie Painter, running solely on an independent line, is being challenged by Republican J. Hugh Quinn, a past supervisor.
Republican and independent candidate Randy Reynolds and independent candidate James Ayott are vying for the highway superintendent position being vacated by Kenneth P. Kinch. And Democratic Councilman Francis N. Yerdon, Republicans Keith Munz and Amanda L. Sterling and Independence Party candidate Amy E. Kornberger are running for two council seats.
Five other Lewis County towns also have contested races Tuesday:
■ Diana — Town Councilwoman Patricia A. Arnold, running on an independent line, will face Republican candidates James A. Durkish and Joseph "Chuck" Langs for two council seats.
■ Greig — Democratic Highway Superintendent Ernest P. Csizsmar is being challenged by Republican Ricky J. Watson and independent candidate Peter F. Alfano, a past highway chief.
■ Leyden — Democrat Steven M. Fox and Republican Helen C. McHale are vying for a vacant council seat. Democratic Councilman Andrew J. Millick and Republican Councilman Verle E. Yelton are being challenged by independent candidate Carol Lustyik.
■ Lowville — Republican Councilmen Paul R. Virkler and Ruth I. Laribee are being challenged by Democrat Edward M. Murphy.
■ Martinsburg — Democratic Councilman Gordon E. Peebles and Republican Councilman Mike J. McGrath are being challenged by Republican Jeffrey F. Beyer.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
