A Watertown man was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court to one year in federal prison for embezzling nearly $48,000 from a union local, of which he was treasurer.

Norman J. Stefanik, 52, former treasurer of United Steelworkers International Union Local 1450, Watertown, pleaded guilty in May to embezzlement before Judge David N. Hurd. According to court documents, he admitted that from February 2004 through November 2007 he stole at least $25,808 from the local while serving as its treasurer. The local has about 75 members, all of whom are employees of Knowlton Technologies, Engineered Composites & Media, 213 Factory St.

He was ordered to pay $47,865.04 in restitution and given three years' post-release supervision.
