Whitesboro makes big splash ... again

Heather Cole brings an extra set of clothes to every big meet — just in case.

It's a good thing she did Saturday.

The Whitesboro head coach needed a dry outfit after she received a celebratory toss in the pool from her team, who hung on to capture the Frontier League championship, for the second-consecutive season, at Watertown High School.

Whitesboro scored 334.5 points for the title, while Carthage secured second place with 302 points. Watertown (259) earned third, followed by Lowville (246) fourth. Indian River (218) claimed fifth place out of 12 teams.

The Comets led for nearly the entire first half of the meet, receiving victories from Emily Sauter in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and Maggie Pogue in the 200 free and 100 butterfly. Both girls also swam on the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relays, which clocked the league's fastest times of the season.

The Comets, coached by Nancy Mushtare, hauled in victories in six of the 12 events.

"They have great swimmers on their team, they have amazing times," Cole said of the Carthage squad.

The Comets relinquished the lead for good when Christina Procida of Whitesboro captured the 500 free relay. Whitesboro also placed three other swimmers in the 500. The team's only other first-place event was the 200 free relay.

Kathryn McKinney won the 200 individual medley for Watertown, while teammate Samantha Favret took the 100 backstroke with the fastest time in the league this season.

Olivia McVoy claimed the 100 breaststroke for Beaver River, which enjoyed its most successful season, according to coach Anne Davis.

GIRLS SOCCER

COPENHAGEN 2, CINCINNATUS 1 (OT)

Sara Hovendon struck for both goals, including the winner in overtime, as the No. 3 Golden Knights earned the Class D quarterfinal victory over the No. 11 Lions at Copenhagen.

Briana Moser assisted on the winning goal for Copenhagen (13-3-1), which will play No. 2 Remsen in the semifinals.

Bailey Putman scored for Cincinnatus (9-7-1).

BISHOP-LUDDEN 2, BEAVER RIVER 0

Jenny Smith notched both goals in the top-seeded Gaelic Knights' Class C semifinal victory over the No. 4 Beavers at Syracuse.

Karen Tully made two saves for Bishop-Ludden (14-2-1).

Jennifer Shermerhorn stopped seven shots in goal for Beaver River (8-6-4).

BOYS SOCCER

CINCINNATUS 3, LYME 1

The No. 6 Indians' season came to an end with a Class D quarterfinal loss to No. 3 Cincinnatus at SUNY Cortland.

Cory Walker scored the lone goal for Lyme (13-5) in the first half. However, his first-half penalty kick was also stopped by Cincinnatus goalie William Rheinheimer.

Lyme goalie Justin Henderson made seven saves.

Nick Constantino, Cody Warner and Shondo Wright scored for Cincinnatus (15-3).

HAMILTON 2, ALEXANDRIA 0

The No. 12 Purple Ghosts fell to No. 4 seed and defending Class D state champion Hamilton in a quarterfinal game at Hamilton.

Hamilton (14-3-1), which plays top-seeded Copenhagen in the semifinals, scored an early first-half goal then scored late in the second half.

Goalie Shane Davis stopped 12 shots in goal for Alexandria (9-7-1).

WESTHILL 2, SOUTH JEFFERSON 0

Andrew McBride and Anthony Scaravillo scored to lift the No. 6 Warriors to a Class B quarterfinal victory over the No. 3 Spartans at Adams.

Ryan Boyle stopped two shots in goal for Westhill (13-4-1).

Tyler Decker and Patrick Gilligan combined for 12 saves for South Jefferson (12-3-1).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

CHENEY, BEAVERS VICTORIOUS

Matt Cheney crossed the finish line ahead of 102 other runners to lead Beaver River to the team victory in the varsity 2 race at the Adirondack Invitational in Boonville.

Logan Kempney and Ryan Scanlon were third and fourth, respectively, for the Beavers.

Sam Anderson was ninth to lead South Lewis to fourth place.

PIERCE, TRAYNOR SHINE

Matt Pierce of Canton finished third of 179 runners in the varsity 1 race at the Adirondack Invitational in Boonville.

Canton was the sixth-place team, while Holland Patent took the team title.

Nate Traynor led South Jefferson with a fifth-place finish.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

CAMPANIAN, BEAVERS WIN

Karlee Duffer earned a second-place finish to help guide Beaver River to the team victory in the varsity 2 race at the Adirondack Invitational.

Victoria Campanian won the race, and Alexandra Doney was third for South Lewis, which placed fourth.

BEAUDETTE TAKES SECOND

Aimee Beaudette of Canton placed second of 126 runners in the varsity 1 race of the Adirondack Invitational in Boonville.

Sophie Goobic was eighth for fifth-place Canton.
