ADAMS — Rescue personnel extinguished a fire Sunday night that damaged the former Greenley Fuel Co. warehouse along Phelps Street, also known as VFW Drive.

The fire began inside the 5,000-square-foot building at about 7 p.m. and was extinguished within 45 minutes by fire crews from Adams, Adams Center and Lorraine.

The fire threatened to burn National Grid power lines bordering the property which supply power to a large portion of southern Jefferson County, said Joseph D. Plummer, county fire and emergency management director. Power was not interrupted.

Mr. Plummer said the warehouse was not hooked to electricity prior to the fire. A Veterans of Foreign Wars post located next door was evacuated but not damaged.

Mr. Plummer said no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was being investigated.

Times archives indicate the building was the site of a fire intentionally set by youths in November 2001.
