Cannoneers split in season opener

Nicole Perry generated 19 points and distributed seven assists as the Jefferson Community College women's basketball team opened its season Sunday with a 48-44 Region 3 victory over visiting SUNY Delhi.

The Broncos (0-1) mounted a second half charge behind Shanay Bradley's 16 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocked shots, but couldn't overcome registering just 14 first half points.

Dana Stenhouse contributed 10 points and eight rebounds for JCC (1-0), while Alicia Uhlein added nine rebounds and four assists.

The Cannoneers fell behind by 15 points at halftime, and lost in their season-opening, Region 3 matchup with the Broncos.

Tavarus Stevens hit four 3s and finished with a game-high 24 points for Delhi (1-0).

Terence Henderson paced Jefferson's efforts, pouring in 23 points to go with 15 rebounds. James Biggs turned in 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cannoneers (0-1).

Delhi out-shot Jefferson 33-24 from the free throw line.

Chris Cumella and Kevin Hicks each connected for a goal and an assist as the Kangaroos coasted to a Sunrise Conference triumph.

SUNY Canton (9-5-2, 7-3-2), which didn't allow a single shot on goal, scored three times in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Repton Abrahams, James Catillaz and Dennis Frost also scored.

VOLLEYBALL

SAINTS COMPETE AT REGIONAL

New York University rallied to win three straight games, and defeat St. Lawrence University 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-12, 15-7 in the championship match of the New York Regional tournament at Ithaca College.

Nyasha Miller tallied 17 kills and 15 digs, while Jessica Lucky had 17 kills and 10 digs for SLU during the final match.

The Saints beat RIT 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 earlier in the day.

Clarkson, which, according to its Web site, had several team members suffering from flu-like symptoms, withdrew from the tournament Friday.
