Cheryl D. Lane, Republican, is well on her way to a win in the race for Jefferson County Clerk, according to early unofficial results.

With 623 percent of the election district reporting, Mrs. Lane has 8,280 votes, to 3,055 for Democrat Gertrude M. Karris.

Mrs. Lane has been a staff member at the county clerk's office since 1976 and a deputy county clerk since July. Former Jefferson County Clerk JoAnn M. Wilder endorsed Mrs. Lane.

The clerk's office operates the Department of Motor Vehicles offices in Watertown and Fort Drum, records and preserves deeds, county court records, judgments, liens, mortgages, doing-business-as filings and genealogical records, accepts passport applications and keeps records on notary public renewals.
