Residents in the city of Watertown have unofficially elected Teresa R. Macaluso and Jeffrey M .Smith to represent them on the City Council.
Unofficial results provided by the Jefferson County Board of Elections show that Miss Macaluso and Mr. Smith are leading the three-way nonpartisan race for the two seats being vacated by stand-in councilman Jason R. Burto and Mr. Smith, whose term is expiring.
Finishing last is Stephen J. Bradley, a former councilman and owner of Abbey Carpets, 150 Court St. He sat on the council from 2003 to 2007.
The seats are being opened because the terms of Mr. Smith and former Councilman Peter L. Clough will expire Dec. 31. While Mr. Smith chose to run for re-election, Mr. Clough resigned from the seat in August after moving outside of the city limits. His seat was later filled by Mr. Burto.
Mr. Smith and Mr. Bradley have advertised similar platforms to push the use of alternative energy and expand the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds municipal arena. The pair campaigned door to door together and publicly focused their attacks at Miss Macaluso.
Last week, Miss Macaluso accused Mr. Bradley of pilfering her campaign signs, a charge he denied.
