David J. Lane, the son of Cheryl D. and Stephen R. Lane, Dexter, was killed today in a car crash while on duty as a state trooper.

State police said Mr. Lane, 30, struck a telephone pole after he made contact with another vehicle while trying to pass it on a Catskill road and drove off the roadway. The accident happened at 2:25 p.m, troopers said.

Mr. Lane, the couple's youngest son, lived in Catskill and served in Troop F, which is headquartered in Middletown. The trooper was in Watertown on Tuesday night to celebrate his mother's victory in the Jefferson County clerk's race.

A 1997 graduate of General Brown, Mr. Lane served in the U.S. Army's C Company, 307th Engineer Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, N.C. His service included stints in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. Lane graduated from the New York State Police Academy in 2006.
