ROSSIE — Wesley "Bud" J. Merritt, age 71, of Rossie, died on November 1, 2009 at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur.
Wes was born on February 16, 1938 in Hailesboro; he was a son of the late Irvin and Gertrude Merritt. He graduated from Harrisville High School and attended the criminal justice program at J.C.C.
Mr. Merritt proudly served in the United States Marines. He also worked for St. Lawrence Dredge and Dock in Clayton for many years, designing and building dock systems along the river.
He married Jean M. Ayen on July 8, 1961. The couple has lived in Rossie for 42 years. Wes enjoyed hunting, fishing and four wheeling. He was one of the charter members of the Adirondack ATV Club in Harrisville and his knowledge was sought by other clubs as they were forming.
His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Jean Merritt, five daughters; Shawnee and Robert Brozzo, Gloria and Arnold Graham, Rose Fuller, Rebecca Turner and her companion, Richard Webb, Pearl and David Couliballi, a son, Wesley and Candy Merritt, a former son-in-law, Tom Fuller, a brother, Larry and three sisters; Patricia Wilmet, Barb Paquette, and Linda Rose. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by a grandson, Christopher Merritt, a son at birth, George Wesley, a brother, Lyle Merritt and two sisters, Ruth Whitney and Sharon Merritt.
There will visitation on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 6 until 7 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. His memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. with Deacon Norma Gee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orleans Four Corners officiating.
