A fire in an apartment building at 149 Keyes Ave. has resulted in one fatality, said Watertown City Fire Department battalion chief Patrick J. Wiley.

Fire officials would not give the identity of the victim. But Bruce A. Hunter, who owns the apartment building, said he believes his tenant, William H. Stitt, died in the blaze.

The Watertown City Fire Departments responded to the blaze shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and kept the fire contained mostly to the back porch of the building.

Janet E. England, a resident of one of the upstairs apartments, escaped the building unharmed.

"I just saw flames from the back side come right up by my living room window, and that's when I just ran," she said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The building houses six apartments, but the fire department is not sure how many tenants lived there, Mr. Wiley said.

No other fatalities have been reported.
