Malone woman is accused of having sex with an inmate

MALONE — A 41-year-old woman is accused of having sex Friday with a Bare Hill Correctional Facility inmate.

Lori J. Shova, 120 Duane St., Malone, was charged Friday with second-degree sexual abuse and official misconduct, both misdemeanors, state police said.

The state police and state Department of Correctional Services inspector general's office conducted the investigation. She was issued an appearance ticket for Thursday in Town Court.

Ms. Shova, who worked as a vocational instructor at the medium-security prison, was fired after the incident, DOCS spokesman Erik J. Kriss said. She had been working at the prison since July 3, 2006, as a provisional employee.

"But because she was a provisional employee, she did not have union protection," Mr. Kriss said. "She tried to resign, but we terminated her."
