Nov. 7, 1999:Watertown native Michael J. Carbone, a member of the U.S. Secret Service, was in Watertown to speak and be honored at this alma mater, Jefferson Community College. He received the first Jefferson Professional Achievement Award.

25 years ago

Nov. 7, 1984:Two pickets, one of them a chief union negotiator, were arrested outside the Beaverite Products Inc. plant, Beaver Falls, as company officials began interviewing job applicants to replace approximately 170 striking paperworkers at three plants in Lewis County.

50 years ago

Nov. 7, 1959:The radar bomb scoring detachment, which will be stationed at Camp Drum to score simulated attacks by Strategic Air Command bombers, will combine radar and radio to determine the success of the trained SAC air crews. Electronic "echoes," dots and "blips," familiar to the Air Force radar specialists, will play important roles in determining the accuracy of the mission.

75 years ago

Nov. 7, 1934:The "crossroads" campaign of the Watertown Community Chest organization upon which, officials believe, depends the future of this method of raising funds, gets under way with a luncheon at the YMCA. A total of 12,000 individuals will be contacted personally.

100 years ago

Nov. 7, 1909:N.B. Lavar, a Gouverneur meat dealer, purchased a beef cow from John Babcock, who agreed to deliver the animal at the farm of Earl Laidlaw. Mr. Lavar's assistant and another man went to the farm, found one cow in the barn and delivered it to the market. Mr. Laidlaw was absent and upon his return found one of his valuable Holstein-Friesian cows had disappeared. The slaughtered cow was valued at $75 and had freshened the previous day so the meat was not fit for use and was a total loss.

Nov. 7, 1884:The Davis sewing machine factory is turning out 100 machines daily.
