Some 2,000 school buses that may have safety problems are still on the road, eight years after federal government regulators cited deficiencies.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been trying to track down the company responsible for the recalled parts, the Chicago Tribune reported. Regulators want New York-based Transportation Collaborative Inc. to fix the problems on the small buses, many of which are used to transport disabled students.
The Tribune reported that the company had agreed to notify customers this month that some of the bus parts needed to be recalled. Seat backs and seat belt anchors are not strong on the buses; wheelchair lifts in some are defective.
These are safety issues that should have been resolved years ago. This should be done soon.
