GOUVERNEUR — Auctioneer Donald A. Peck, a St. Lawrence County legislator, has opened Don's Used Furniture and Variety Store.

The store, across from the town offices on Route 11 in a strip plaza, will feature a changing inventory of appliances, used furniture, some food, tools and miscellaneous other items.

"I have a warehouse full," Mr. Peck said.

Mr. Peck operates an auction house on Cream of the Valley Road and sometimes buys tractor-trailer loads of food or special items, such as toys around Christmas.

He buys households, some of which he funnels through the auction barn, and some items sit unsold.

"People are always calling me, saying, 'Do you have a dresser or a stove, things like that?'" Mr. Peck said.

The store, which he rents on a month-to-month basis, gives him an opportunity to unload items in a retail setting. He may purchase a load of "scratch and dent" furniture to augment his offerings.

The store also may offer occasional specials on dog food, gloves, laundry detergent or other bulk items.

"It's just like a little variety store," Mr. Peck said. "If you see it there one time, you may not see it again."

The store will have one full-time employee, and use the staff of the auction house to make deliveries within the village.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
