Nov. 14, 1999:It has taken many hands to get the Amish school on Route 184, DePeyster, back in service after a fire caused by a wood stove gutted it. Desks, chairs and books were destroyed, but one of the shareholders, the members of the community who oversee the school, had some old books at home and the students will use those until new ones are found.

Nov. 14, 1984:Watertown Cinema Center may expand, according to Interstate Theaters Inc., Boston, Mass., owners of the four-movie-house complex. Spokesman Daniel Vieira said Interstate has discussed expanding the movie complex as a result of the Fort Drum expansion and to keep pace with the theater industry.

Nov. 14, 1959:The St. Lawrence Paper Co. mill, Norfolk's biggest industry, was shut down today and will be sold. The Norfolk paper mill has been in operation since 1901.

Nov. 14, 1934:Pupils in the public schools today contributed $213 to the Community Chest. Some of them raised their shares in unique manners. The pupils of one school bought a cow, sold the milk and retained the profit for the chest.
100 years ago
Nov. 14, 1909:Of the 55 or more automobiles parked around the gridiron at the football game in Canton, fully half belonged to Ogdensburg parties. The day was superb for motoring, and the fact that the new state road would be open its full length proved an inducement few motorists could resist. All praised the new highway. The best time made by any of the machines was 29 minutes for the 18 miles.

Nov. 14, 1884:Mendelssohn's Oratorio of Athalie at Arsenal Street, M.E. Church this evening. It is not likely that the people of Watertown will have an opportunity to hear this oratorio again soon and they should avail themselves of the opportunity. Best soloist, large and well-trained chorus, accompanied by pipe organ. Comfortable seats.
