DEKALB JUNCTION — Edwin T. Chapman, Sr., 92 of Old DeKalb Road died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at United Helpers Nursing Home, Canton, where he had been a resident since April.
Born June 12, 1917 in Stockholm, NY, he was the son of the late Edwin S. and Lois A. Tracy Chapman and graduated from high school in the Bronx, NYC.
Following graduation he worked at a government factory at Brent Lake, was a farmer in Brookdale, later purchasing a farm on Old Canton Road in Dekalb Junction, was employed with Tecon Company, working on the Seaway and served as town of Stockholm Assessor for several years. The family farm was sold in 1980 and Mr. and Mrs. Chapman than had an upholstery business.
He married Cecile Arquitte on February 11, 1942. The couple took care of many foster children.
Mr. Chapman enjoyed working on his farm, vacationing in Florida, making maple syrup, singing and playing guitar. He had a great sense of humor and very much appreciated the care he received at the United Helpers Nursing Home.
Survivors include his wife, Cecile Chapman; a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin T. Chapman, Jr. and June Storie, Canton; three daughters and their husbands, Jean and Richard Hamilton, Trout Lake, Rena and Jim Roach, Ogdensburg, Carol Ann and Dwayne Burnap, Stockholm; a son-in-law, Frank Rinquest, VA; 13 grandchildren: 10 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
A daughter, Beth Rinquest, 5 brothers, Floyd, Clarence, Robert, Howard and Clifton, and three sisters, Marjorie, Ruth and Doris died before him.
There will be a private memorial service with Rev. Ralph and Rev. Carl Chapman officiating.
