ALEXANDRIA BAY/NORTH SYRACUSE — Herbert C. Malstrom, 94 of Homeland Road, North Syracuse and Alexandria Bay died at Loretto Nursing Home, Syracuse Wednesday, November 11, 2009 where he was a resident.

Born March 22, 1915 in East Longmeadow, MA, he was the son of the late Arthur and Emma (Zern) Malstrom. He grew up in Chattanooga, TN and graduated from Chattanooga High School and attended University of Chattanooga.

Mr. Malstrom served in the United States Army in the Corps Of Engineers from 1943 - 1946 serving in the Pacific during World War II and was honorably discharged. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority before moving to Syracuse to work at Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) as a mechanic and later as a bookkeeper until his retirement in 1977.

He married Ruth Cranker on October 25, 1942 at the Alexandria Bay United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger F. Williams, pastor officiating. Mrs. Malstrom died March 10, 1992.

Mr. Malstrom was a member of the Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church in North Syracuse, volunteered for Meals On Wheels for 2 years, and enjoyed doing home improvements and disassembling and fixing items from watches to engines.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Carolyn Malstrom, Ballston Lake ; a son and his wife, Drs. Robert and Maria Malstrom, Aiken, SC; a grandson, Michael Malstrom, North Syracuse and Michael's mother, Vanessa Malstrom, Naples, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service at Redwood Cemetery will be private.
