PLATTSBURGH — Three area runners earned second-place finishes at the state cross country championships Saturday at SUNY Plattsburgh.
Matt Cheney of Beaver River claimed second place in the Class D boys division, while Aimee Beaudette of Canton and Victoria Campanian of South Lewis were second in the girls Class C and D races, respectively.
Cheney paced the two-time defending champion Beavers to 76 points for a second-place team finish. Barker earned 66 points for the team title, while Mike Champagne of Plattsburgh Seton Catholic secured his second-consecutive individual championship. Logan Kempney was 18th and Ryan Scanlon 19th for Beaver River.
Also in Class D boys, Jon Eng of Norwood-Norfolk was 12th, and Sam Anderson of South Lewis placed 16th.
Matt Pierce of Canton captured 21st in Class B boys, while Nate Traynor of South Jefferson finished 24th.
The Beaver River girls, who placed third in Class D with 93 points, were led by Karlee Duffer in eighth place and Deidra Beller at 23rd.
Emily Cotey captured 11th place and Hannah Seguin was 16th to guide Norwood-Norfolk to fifth in Class D girls, while Alexandra Doney was 17 for South Lewis.
Sophie Goobic of Canton was 18th in the Class C girls division.

NEW HARTFORD 1, MASSENA 0
Zach Hecox scored an unassisted goal in the 26th minute to lead the New Hartford to a win over Massena in a state Class A quarterfinal game at Chittenango.
The Red Raiders (15-6-1) outshot New Hartford 10-4 but couldn't get anything past Spartans goalie Jason Kilroy, who finished with six saves. Tom Ward stopped two shots for Massena. New Hartford improved to 19-2.
CHAZY 5, HARRISVILLE 0
Brandon Laurin and Tyler Bulriss each scored twice to lead Chazy past the Pirates (16-2-2) in a state Class D quarterfinal at Plattsburgh High School. Nathan Reynolds also scored for Chazy (18-0-2).
GIRLS SOCCER
BURNT HILLS 4, MASSENA 1
Massena surrendered four first-half goals, three by Monica Wolf, and fell to Burnt Hills Ballston Lake at Stillwater High School in Stillwater.
The Red Raiders close out their season at 15-3.
"They were a well-schooled and very skilled team," said Massena coach Ryan Hayes. "The speed they came out with killed us. And we just couldn't get our offense going. They kept us under pressure."
Massena scored in the second half when Coree Phillips connected for an unassisted goal.
"In the second half, we played much better and we were more composed," Hayes said. "We got a better first touch on the ball and that helped create some opportunities,"
Ashley Hann made eight saves in goal for Massena.
CHAZY 5, CHATEAUGAY 2
Victoria Reynolds tallied two goals to send the Eagles (20-0) past Chateaugay in a Class D state quarterfinal at Plattsburgh High School.
Astrid Kempainen, Caitlyn LaPier and Emily LaPierre also scored for Chazy. Alexis Beach and Marissa Cook scored for the Bulldogs (17-2).
