Hackett breaks school mark, leads St. Lawrence to victory

WORCESTER, Mass. — Senior co-captain Connor Hackett scored his 27th career touchdown to break the St. Lawrence University record as the Saints ended the season with a 24-21 Liberty League victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday.

Hackett's touchdown came at the 11-minute, 36-second mark in the first quarter. The senior running back broke the Saints' all-time touchdown mark that had stood since 1978.

Watertown native Eric Jones ran for 179 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, and sophomore Marcus Washington added 42 yards and a rushing touchdown on just three carries for St. Lawrence (3-7 overall, 2-5 league).

Defensively for the Saints, Gerard Bryant supplied an interception, forced a fumble, recorded 2.5 sacks and a team-high eight tackles.

Jack Mulhern had 12 tackles and a sack, and R.C Grady topped 100 yards receiving on 12 catches for WPI (3-7, 0-7).

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

CLARKSON 4, COLGATE 1

Dominique Thibault scored two goals to help the Golden Knights (12-2-1, 6-1) move back into sole possession of first place in ECAC Hockey with a win over Colgate in Hamilton.

Genevieve Lavoie and Juana Baribeau also scored for Clarkson.

Marissa Dombovy scored for the Raiders (2-8-2, 1-3-2).

ST. LAWRENCE 3, CORNELL 2

The Saints (5-4-4, 3-3-1) scored three unanswered goals to knock Cornell from a first-place tie with Clarkson in an ECAC Hockey game in Ithaca.

Tara Akstull scored twice for SLU, including the game-winner at 14 minutes, 39 seconds of the third period. Vanessa Emond also scored for the Saints.

Catherine White and Kelly McGinty scored for the Big Red (5-3, 5-1).

SUNY POTSDAM 6, SACRED HEART 3

Breanna Roy produced two goals to propel the Bears past the Pioneers at Maxcy Hall Arena.

Jen Conophy recorded 19 saves and Hilary Hitchman had 17 for SUNY Potsdam (3-2).

Junior Brittany Hartman dished out two assists for Sacred Heart (1-6).

MEN'S HOCKEY

SUNY CANTON 5, NIAGARA 4 (OT)

Adam Fedor scored his second overtime goal in as many days as SUNY Canton swept a weekend series in a club hockey game at the Canton Pavilion.

The Kangaroos have won four straight games and are 7-1 in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League and 8-7 overall.

Fedor had a hand in three of the team's five goals on Saturday.

SUNY Canton took a 2-1 lead behind goals from Corey Frizell and Eric Cook. Niagara tied the game with 3:35 left in the second period, but Fedor put the Kangaroos ahead before Kevin Morrison tied the game for Niagara again, setting up overtime.

Frizell added two assists.

Jimmy Merrow made 13 saves for the Kangaroos.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

SAINTS ELIGIBLE FOR NCAA BID

St. Lawrence University junior captain Dan Ramsey finished fifth overall at the NCAA Atlantic Regional race at Letchworth State Park, leading the men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish.

The Saints are now eligible for an at-large bid into next weekend's NCAA Championship race. They received an at-large bid last year after a fourth-place finish in regionals. The selection committee will reveal the Division III field at 3 p.m. today.

Cortland State won Saturday's race, followed by Geneseo State, New York University and RIT. Cortland and Geneseo will each receive an automatic bid into next weekend's championship.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

PAVLUS, SAINTS WIN REGIONAL

Tupper Lake's Wendy Pavlus defended her individual crown while leading the No. 6 St. Lawrence University team to its first Atlantic Regional title at Letchworth State Park.

By virtue of winning Saturday's race, the Saints will receive an automatic bid into next Saturday's NCAA Championship race at Baldwin-Wallace College in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Saints placed three runners in the top five. In addition to Pavlus, senior Johannah Ludington placed third and sophomore Jenna Hulton finished fifth.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

MAINE-FORT KENT 6, CANTON 0

The No. 3 SUNY Canton women's soccer team saw its season end with a loss to the top-seeded Bengals in the Sunrise Conference Championship in Scarborough, Maine.

Whitney Sinclair capped an outstanding weekend by scoring four goals, giving her eight in two games. The University of Maine at Fort Kent (17-0) won its second straight conference championship and will advance to the NAIA national tournament.

Aubrey Parrish recorded four saves for SUNY Canton (10-9).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

HOUGHTON 59, SUNY CANTON 28

Shannon Daugherty scored 13 points and Ashley Dupler added 10 to lead host Houghton past the Kangaroos (0-2) in a nonconference game.

Shannon LaFave scored 13 points to lead SUNY Canton.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

HOUGHTON 72, SUNY CANTON 56

Devin Paige scored 17 points and Ryan Shay added 16 to lead host Houghton to a nonconference win over SUNY Canton (0-2).

Tony Valentin led the Kangaroos with 24 points. Tony Parker grabbed 12 rebounds for SUNY Canton.
