After awarding more than $10 million toward north country in the last year, Empire State Development President Dennis M. Mullen made a brief stop to Watertown today to check up on one of the program's investments.

Mr. Mullen, along with city officials and members of the media toured Riverview Plaza, 498 Newell St., which is being renovated into 30 apartments, three commercials areas and a laundromat.

“This is exactly what Restore New York is,” Mr. Mullen said of the grant program that awarded $1 million toward the project. “This is taking an existing building and developing it into something that is useful and vital to the community.”

The project is the third of four being pursued by developer Michael A. Treanor. He also already converted the former Adams High School into an apartment building and restored the Buckley Building in Carthage.

He also plans to develop the abandoned Woolworth Building in downtown Watertown.

For more on this project, see Tuesday's Watertown Daily Times and watch the short video below.
