Olaus (Ollie) J. Audet, age 86, died peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Seven, Lakes, Ft. Myers, Florida on November 12, 2009.
Born in Tupper Lake, New York on April 24, 1923, he graduated from Tupper Lake High School where he was a sixteen- letter athlete. After three years in the United States Army, mostly in the WWII South Pacific theater, he matriculated at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York. There he was a member and officer of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played varsity football and baseball. Upon graduation in 1950 he worked in retail management for ten years and then returned to St. Lawrence to earn his M.Ed.
He then became a physical education teacher at Madrid-Waddington (NY) Central School and later at Canton (NY) Central School where he coached football, baseball and basketball and was director of athletics for twenty years. He was elected to the Madrid-Waddington, Canton Central, Tupper Lake and St. Lawrence University Halls of Fame. He retired in 1985 to Pine Lakes Country Club, North Fort Myers, and moved to Seven Lakes in 2006. He loved returning to the family cottage in Ogdensburg, NY on the St. Lawrence River every summer. An avid golfer, he scored eight holes-in-one over the years and in 2009 shot an 84, two less than his age.
He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty years, Barbara; three sons: Olaus J. III, Rochester, NY; David M. (wife Wendy, sons Benjamin and Spencer) of Portland, OR; and Andrew J. (wife Leslie, son Zachary and daughter Gabrielle) of Sharon, MA. He was pre-deceased by his parents and four siblings.
Arrangements are with the National Cremation Society; burial will be in the Spring in New York.
