Pickering sparks Knights to debut win

POTSDAM — Elson Pickering started his 2009-10 season with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds as Clarkson downed Cazenovia, 76-62, in a nonconference men's basketball game Sunday.

Keith Murray added 19 points, and Brandon Linton supplied 13 for the Golden Knights.

Cameron Smith paced the Wildcats (0-1 overall) with 18 points.

SUNY BROCKPORT 75,

ST. LAWRENCE 72

Josh Zenkel led an 11-point comeback for the Golden Eagles in a nonconference win over the Saints in Canton.

Jermaine Johnson generated 13 points, including two 3-point baskets for SUNY Brockport (1-0).

Massena native Garrett Sharlow led St. Lawrence (0-1) with a game-high 19 points.

UTICA 84, SUNY POTSDAM 79

Patrick Goodman proved too much for the Bears to handle as he scored 19 points and snagged 11 rebounds in a nonconference win for the Pioneers in Utica.

James Paterson had 13 points, and Will Abrams and Geoff Brown had a dozen each for Utica (1-0).

Anthony Williams supplied 19 points to lead SUNY Potsdam (0-1).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

ST. LAWRENCE 83,

SUNY BROCKPORT 64

Case Capello led six St. Lawrence players in double figures with 16 points as the Saints cruised to a nonconference win over the Golden Eagles in Canton.

Iris Santoni had 15 points, while Abby Stanton and Brittany Parham supplied 13 points apiece for St. Lawrence (1-0).

Whitney Smith canned three 3-point baskets on her way to 21 points for SUNY Brockport (0-1).

UTICA 71, SUNY POTSDAM 62

Jessica Berry's 15 points and 17 rebounds propelled the Pioneers to a nonconference win over the Bears in Utica.

Devon Croll added 16 points, 12 coming from the free-throw line for Utica (1-0).

Cortney Poirier had a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds for SUNY Potsdam (0-1).

CROSS COUNTRY

SAINTS EARN AT-LARGE BID

St. Lawrence's men's cross country team earned a trip to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year, the school announced Sunday.

The Saints will compete in the national event hosted by Baldwin-Wallace next weekend in Cleveland. The race follows the women's national event, tentatively scheduled for noon Saturday.
