Potsdam

Assists in India: Sandhya Parikh,physician assistant in Canton-Potsdam Hospital's Chemical Dependence Services, recently traveled to India to provide free medical care to indigent patients in Gujarat, India, through the Shree Santram Janseva Mandir, a free and sliding-scale clinic operated by the Shree Santram Janseva Trust, Nadiad, Gujarat.

Ms. Parikh treated 50 patients in August and September, some who walked more than 15 miles to receive aid.

The Santram Mandir is a temple in Nadiad, Gujarat, dedicated to a Hindu saint who is said to have performed charitable work in Gujarat in the 1800s. The trust continues the work, providing charity to the poor, such as the work in the medical clinic.

Brasher Falls

Winners: Zachary Richardsreceived first place, raising the most money for Brasher Falls' CROP Walk, and received a $100 gift certificate from Prima Bella's Restaurant, Brasher Falls.Karolee Hibbert,second place in donations, received a $20 gift certificate from IGA, Brasher Falls.

The walk, held Sunday, Oct. 25 in Brasher Falls, had approximately 35 walkers, raising a total of $1,600 to battle hunger and poverty.

Ogdensburg, Star Lake

Return from deployment:Army Sgt.Sean M. Questel,son of Thomas R. Questel, Lee Road, Ogdensburg, is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to the Iraqi theater of operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Questel, a medical sergeant with nine years of military service, is normally assigned to the 520th Medical Company at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Army Pfc.Marc D. Beck,son of Giselle A. Beck, Schenectady, and grandson of Fred E. and Theresa L. Stotzer, Star Lake, has returned to the U.S. after a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Mr. Beck, a radio and communications security repairer with two years of military service, is normally assigned to the 98th Maintenance Company, Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska. He is a 2003 graduate of Clifton-Fine Central School, Star Lake.

Gouverneur

Enters Uniformed Services University:Air Force 2nd Lt.Mark A. Lamson,son of Paul M. and Carol A. Lamson, Route 812, Gouverneur, has entered into the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., as a first-year medical student of a four-year program. The lieutenant graduated in 2005 from Gouverneur Central School, and received a bachelor's degree in 2009 from Clarkson University, Potsdam.

The cadet is a student at Canisius College, Buffalo.

Receives medal:Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacy A. Smith, daughter of Army Sgt. Maj. Mark D. and Pamela A. Smith, Watertown, received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional achievement as an integral member of the color guard at Navy Information Operations Command, Md. Ms. Smith is a 2007 graduate of Carthage Central School and joined the Navy in February 2008.

Clayton

Students honored: Daniel Bowman and Julianne Rhinebeck,students at Thousand Island Central School, Clayton, recently were named school winners for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. Both students were selected Oct. 28 as finalists on the state level.

Mr. Bowman is a class officer and member of the Honor Society, varsity club and K-Island Gears and participates in soccer, basketball and golf. He volunteers at St. Mary's Church, Thousand Islands Booster Club, Youth Commission and Coaches vs. Cancer and is a Franciscan Mystery Player.

Ms. Rhinebeck is a class officer and student council president and a member of the Honor Society, student council, varsity club, select vocal ensemble and drama club. She participates in swimming and diving and volunteers at Thousand Island Art Center, Thousand Islands Booster Club, American Red Cross, Coaches vs. Cancer and Relay for Life and is a Theresa Clement Dance Assistant and People to People Ambassador (China.)

Mr. Bowman and Ms. Rhinebeck are both in the top 7 percent of their class with a grade point average of 94 or above and enrolled and completed AP and honors courses.

Henderson

National finalist:Timothy M. Forrester,Henderson, was a national finalist in the agricultural processing-entrepreneurship/placement proficiency award program at the 82nd FFA National Convention from Oct. 21 to 24 in Indianapolis, Ind.

A son of Daryl and Mary Forrester, Henderson, and president of the Belleville Henderson Central School FFA, he began a fish-cleaning business six years ago at Henchen Marina in Henderson Harbor and has cleaned well over 10,000 fish a year since then. He leases space on a dock, where hundreds of fishermen over the years have brought their fish for him to clean and process.

Mr. Forrester was also an agricultural business finalist in September at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass.

He is a graduate of Clifton Fine Central School, Star Lake, and received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Rochester Institute of Technology. Mr. Ziemba and his wife, Amy Durham Ziemba, have one son, Peter.

Joins society: Joanna J. Fassett,Adams Center, was recently elected to St. Lawrence University's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the national academic honor society.

Ms. Fassett, a graduate of South Jefferson Central School, Adams, is a senior at SLU, majoring in philosophy with a minor in English writing.
