CANTON — A 23-year-old SUNY Canton student has been charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in a dorm room early Saturday.
Jean-Martin Ady, Brooklyn, asked to have an attorney assigned to his case Tuesday morning in Canton Village Court. He faces charges of second- and third-degree rape and unlawfully dealing with a child.
Ady, of Smith Hall East 107, is in the St. Lawrence County jail awaiting a preliminary hearing Thursday. His bail is set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
He told university police in a statement after his arrest that he believed the girl he had sex with was of legal age. He met her and two of her friends outside his dorm while smoking a cigarette.
"It was freezing out. I did not introduce myself and they did not say what their names were. I asked them to come into the building because they were freezing," Ady told police. "All three of the girls followed me to my room."
He said he had about five beers before one of the girls left after receiving a phone call. He told police that he and one of the girls went to another dorm room and had sex.
"I had sex with the girl. When there were people knocking at the door, the girl said to stop. I stopped. The cops were at the door when it was opened," he said in the statement. "I do not know the age of any of the three girls that I met and brought back to my room. I do not know the age of the girl I had sex with. I did not ask her what her age was. I thought that the girl that I had sex with was at least 18."
Ady, a freshman, has been placed on interim suspension, SUNY Canton spokesman Randy B. Sieminski said. "He's suspended for now and he won't be allowed back on campus pending further judicial action."
Campus police continue to investigate the incident.
"There were other individuals involved in the incident, but since the investigation is ongoing, I'm not sure about specific details," Mr. Sieminski said.
