Evangeline Calender, 93, Franklin St., Watertown, passed away Mon. evening, Nov. 16, 2009, at Samaritan Medical Center.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St., Watertown, on Thurs., Nov. 19, from 10:30 - 12:30 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Vasilio's Greek Orthodox Church at 1 PM with Rev. Fr. Philip Yanulis officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her name to St. Vasilio's Greek Orthodox Church, 516 Franklin St., Watertown, NY 13601.

Mrs. Calender was born in Smryna, Asia Minor on Dec. 17, 1915, the daughter of Ioakim and Poleteme Modinos Iokimidis. The family moved to Athens, Greece in 1922 to escape the holocaust in Asia Minor. She attended schools in Athens.

On Feb. 6, 1949 she married George J. Calender at Trinity Episcopal Church, Watertown. George and his brother owned and operated Calender's General Store until his death on May 29, 1976. After his death, she ran the store with her brother-in-law and in 1986 her son, Louis, took over the business.

She was a member of St. Vasilio's Greek Orthodox Church and its St. Barbara's Philoptochos Society.

Mrs. Calender is survived by her son and his wife, Louis J. and Tula Calender, Watertown; 2 grandchildren, Lynnea and Jacob Calender, both of Watertown; her brother-in-law and his wife, Chris and Eugnie Calender, Watertown; her 2 sisters-in-law, Ann Calender, Watertown, and Betty Calender, Rochester; and her nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her 2 sisters, Aritsa and Corralia, and her brother-in-law, Gregory Calender, all predeceased her.
