Crews hoped to free a freighter that ran aground on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence Seaway with a late-night effort Saturday.

Andrew K. Bogora, spokesman for Canada's St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp., said four tugboats were set to make another attempt to pull the CSL Assiniboine from a shoal about 9 p.m. Saturday.

The Canada Steamship Lines vessel, which is carrying a large load of grain, ran aground about two miles east of the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge on Monday.

Mr. Bogora said that crews tried to transfer some of the cargo off the vessel to lighten its load Saturday morning, but were deterred by rain. The ship is not blocking Seaway traffic.
