CANTON — A Canton couple who met 19 years ago while working in a photography studio have opened their own photo shop in a Miner Street building that's housed photo gear in the past.
Photography Worx, operated by Lizette C. Haenel and her husband, William F. Haenel III, at 641/2 Miner St., offers portrait sittings for individuals, families and even pets. The store is open by appointment only, but the owners said they expect to have regular business hours in about a month.
The building most recently housed Dress for Less, a formalwear consignment shop that opened in February and closed about a month ago. For several years, the one-story building housed Carol R. Barclay's Photography Studio.
Mrs. Haenel has been a professional photographer for about 20 years, taking studio portraits for brides, high school senior portraits, family pictures and more. She shoots weddings and other events, both locally and elsewhere.
"This is my passion. I capture those moments and memories that people want to share with their friends," Mrs. Haenel said.
She uses digital photography, which allows customers to review proofs on the spot.
Mr. Haenel will manage the business and continue to operate his business, Haenel Communication Technologies, an Internet development and consultation firm. He also does photography, specializing in nature, landscapes and wildlife scenes.
For the past several years, the Haenels have been shooting on location and running the business from their village home that they share with four sons, David V., 15, Samuel I., 13, Quentin M., 9, and Benjamin R., 7.
Having the large studio space will allow for walk-in customers and provide more flexibility for photo settings, Mr. Haenel said.
They are renting the building from Melvin and Betty Jaskowski, who live next door at 64 Miner St.
"In an environment like this, that's personal, we have a lot more flexibility, more custom and a much greater ability to meet the needs of individual customers," Mr. Haenel said.
Besides people and pets, the Haenels take photographs of products requested by businesses for their Web sites.
They met in 1990 while working at a photo studio in Middletown and married three years later.
"We met at a photo shop and now we've come full circle," Mrs. Haenel said. "We work well together."
Their business e-mail is photos@photographyworx.com, and the phone is 244-1123.
