Fernando Bermudez served 18 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.
A Manhattan judge recently dismissed the indictment against Mr. Bermudez, who was convicted in 1991 for the shooting death of a teenager. The judge chided prosecutors, noting that witnesses were allowed to confer with one another and one lied in court. All have recanted their testimony.
Mr. Bermudez did not immediately go free since he faces a 27-month sentence in an unrelated federal drug-sale case. However, a federal judge ordered him released until June 30 to allow his attorneys time to meet with federal officials to seek credit for time served.
Mr. Bermudez has served enough time.
