PHILADELPHIA — Town Clerk Mary A. Dimock has resigned effective Monday, town Supervisor Cheryl K. Horton said Tuesday.

"She's done an excellent job ... and been of great service to the people here," Ms. Horton said. "We're sorry to see her leave and wish her well."

Ms. Dimock notified the supervisor of her decision about two weeks ago, Ms. Horton said. Ms. Dimock did not answer calls for comment Tuesday, but Ms. Horton said she was preparing to move out of the state.

The Town Council convened a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss how to fill the position. In addition to the clerk, an elected official, the town has two part-time office employees: Deputy Clerk Cheryl D. Reed and the clerk's assistant, Christine I. Ward.

Ms. Reed has held her position for about 14 years, as long as Ms. Dimock has held hers, Ms. Horton said. Ms. Ward has worked for the town for about a year.

Filling the position quickly is important, Ms. Horton said.

"We have taxes coming up in a month, and we've got to get somebody trained for it," she said.

Ms. Dimock, a Republican, last won re-election in 2007.
