I went to Ithaca College. Those familiar with the school universally know about one thing: The Biggest Little Game in the Country.
It's the Cortaca Jug. It's a football game between Ithaca College and that state school down the road (SUNY Cortland). I don't like to mention it by name. This year, Ithaca won it, 23-20.
This week on the ice, St. Lawrence and Clarkson meet for its one home-and-home series. It is, of course, war in the North Country even if it doesn't register very high nationally, especially with neither Clarkson nor St. Lawrence atop the ECAC Hockey League.
Last meeting — a nonconference game earlier this season — saw the Golden Knights topple the Saints, 4-1. Alex Petizian was in net for that after missing a week with what he thinks was the H1N1 virus.
He had another rough outting this past weekend against Maine. He gave up five goals on 11 shots. Will he be in net to start against Clarkson come Friday? I do not know. That will be one of several questions asked of coach Joe Marsh this week.
I'll also be featuring Petizian as this week's "Get to Know a Saint." If you have any questions you'd like to ask him, feel free to e-mail them to dcassavaugh@wdt.net.
The good news for St. Lawrence is it will have most of its roster back, presumably, for Clarkson. Marsh said last week that first line forwards Jeremiah Cunningham (rib) and Kyle Flanagan (shoulder) will return for Clarkson. Sean Coffey may also be back finally. I'll find out tomorrow.
