Third period notes

Final from Cheel: St. Lawrence 4, Clarkson 3

Goal SLU Curran

Penalty Clarkson

Penalty killed

SLU penalty - Caister - elbowing

A couple real nice chances both teams, but each goalie is playing extremely well here in the last.

Clarkson misses a wide-open centering pass with Petizian out of position.

Saints fail to score on the power play to start the third period.

Second period impressions

An up-and-down period ended with Clarkson and St. Lawrence tied at 3-3. I feel Clarkson out hustled the Saints throughout the period. The Saints were able to get the tying goal with Drewiske, who has come up huge this game. Drewiske has scored his first and second career goals tonight.

His line — Drewiske, Bogosian and Carden — have combined for only three goals previously.

The third period has been the killer of late for the Saints, and without an edge could be disastrous.

The good: St. Lawrence starts the frame on a carry-over power play. Clarkson's Mark Borowiecki picked up a penalty with 10 seconds left in the second.

Second period notes

End of period

St. Lawrence is getting a little extra energy from its third line. The goal certainly helped.

Goal SLU Drewiske - Both career goals this game

Clarkson is looking much more active against the Saints. St. Lawrence is losing every battle for a loose puck.

Clarkson goal: Jake Morley 9:09 - 5-hole on Petizian

St. Lawrence struggling to get it out of their own zone.

GOAL Clarkson Rufenach - came eight seconds after power play ended.

First period impressions

A sluggish start for both teams picked up midway through the frame and ended up seeing three goals. St. Lawrence was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Clarkson is 1-for-2ish. The Golden Knights will have a minute left on a power play to start the second period.

Things are also getting very physical. Mark Armstrong has taken a couple spills. Mike McKenzie was thrown on his back after a play ended. We'll see how this affects or enhances the performance later.

Here is video of the goal from Hughes.

First period notes

End of period

SLU penalty - Klancher - boarding Two minutes

GOAL SLU: George Hughes (Raley, Vermeulen), 17:25 (pp)

Penalty Clarkson

GOAL SLU: Jacob Drewiske (unassisted), 15:31

Penalty killed... SLU gets only a few shots on net. The Saints are now 0-for-2

Penalty Clarkson - Beca high stick

Goal Clarkson DeFazio (Freeman, Beca), 9:51 (power play).

Penalty SLU - Vermeulen

Still no real offense. It's a pretty even game here at Cheel midway through the first period. Also a clean game.

The intensity is a lot less on the ice to start the game tonight. It seems both teams are being a little cautious.

Peanlty killed with SLU getting no shots.

Penalty Clarkson - Defazio

We are underway.

Starters

SLU

Forwards: Brandon Bollig, Travis Vermeulen, Alex Curran

Defensemen: Jeff Caister, Derek Keller.

Goalie: Alex Petizian (2-4-2)

Petizian mentioned last week that getting a start this weekend would be a huge confidence boost. Another bad game, and he may have considerably less playing time.

Clarkson

Forwards: Brandon DeFazio, Tim Marks, Jake Morley

Defensemen: Nik Pokulok, Dan Reed

Goalie: Paul Karpowich (3-6-2).

It's a slightly different starting lineup for the Golden Knights. As expected, Julien Cayer is out with the shoulder injury he suffered during last night's first period.
