Dec. 5, 1999:North country emergency services coordinators can't guarantee that disaster won't strike at midnight Dec. 31. But should catastrophe occur, they are confident the Y2K computer problem will not get in the way of their efforts. Coordinators in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties said their dispatch centers are Y2K-compliant.

Dec. 5 1984:A study proposing nearly $44 million worth of improvements to Northern New York airports is being eyed by state and federal agencies as the region's official aviation plan through the year 2001. It calls for the creation of an airport at Long Lake, in the heart of the Adirondack Park.

Dec. 5, 1959:Organized opposition to the adoption of a 2 percent county sales tax mounted today in three riverfront towns with the village of Clayton taking the most aggressive stand. The argument against the tax is that the city of Watertown will derive the greatest share of the tax money.

Dec. 5, 1934:Erecting a modern daylight building at a cost of $8,000 in which $10,000 worth of new dry cleaning equipment will be installed was started this week by the R. Gibson Inc. laundry at 320 State St. The laundry is being expanded so as to enable the establishment of a larger dry cleaning department that will specialize in coverall service.

Dec. 5, 1909:The members of the Carthage water department discovered a leak in a broken pipe in a rock cut this side of Indian River. It took all day to drain the place so that anything could be done.

Dec. 5, 1884:The apple race at Washington Hall last night was a great success and attracted a large crowd. William Eldridge was the successful contestant and gathered in his 40 apples several seconds ahead of the others.
