MASSENA — Funeral services for Gloria V. Greene, 89, formerly of 14722 State Highway 37, Massena, NY will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St., Massena, NY.
Friends are invited to call at the Phillips Memorial Home on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009 from noon to 2 p.m. Funeral Services will follow calling hours with Pastor Helen Beck officiating. Interment will take place in Ft. Jackson-Hopkinton Cemetery.
Mrs. Greene passed away on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at the Highland Nursing Home where she had been a resident since 2002.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Jane Greene of New Port Richey, FL.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sister, Carma Velez, her loving husband, Leamon A. Greene in 1991 and her granddaughter, Taylor Greene in 2005.
Gloria was born on June 8, 1920 in Massena, NY to the late Esteban and Candida (Lugo) Velez, who immigrated from Puerto Rico through New York City and finally settling in Massena, NY.
Gloria married Leamon Greene on Nov. 19, 1949. In 1950, the couple purchased a farmhouse and 120 acres in Louisville, NY where she had lived for over 50 years.
Mrs. Greene worked as a sales clerk for Beckers Store, Fishman Department store and Slavins furniture. Gloria loved to do community work for her church and the Salvation Army. She also spent countless hours visiting nursing homes and talking with the residents.
In 1995, Mrs. Greene was named the Salvation Army "Bell Ringer of the Year." Gloria will always be remembered as a great sales lady, having raised money for many charities over the years, In her free time, Mrs. Greene enjoyed researching her family history and published "Greene Genealogy 1606 to 1962." Gloria was a member of the Louisville Landing Church where she also was the treasurer for over 20 years.
