MALONE — A Massena teen will serve a year in Franklin County jail for torching a garage on Frogtown Road in the town of Bombay.

Sam J. Lanphear III, 19, of 1875 Route 420, was sentenced Monday in Franklin County Court before Judge Robert G. Main Jr. on attempted third-degree arson, a felony. He also was ordered to pay $4,566 in restitution.

He admitted to setting the Nov. 8, 2008, fire at 9 Frogtown Road.

Mr. Lanphear still faces a third-degree arson charge in St. Lawrence County for reportedly starting a fire Nov. 8, 2008, at 116 Gladding Road in the town of Norfolk.

Mr. Lanphear was sentenced in November 2008 in St. Lawrence County Court to one year of interim probation for being part of a group that went on a spray-painting spree July 28, 2008, that targeted St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and other property in the village of Massena. He pleaded guilty in September 2008 to felony third-degree criminal mischief.

His Franklin County sentence will run consecutive to any jail sentence he's serving now, the Franklin County district attorney's office said.

Mr. Lanphear remains in the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton.
