An unspecified number of Verizon customers were without phone service for about four hours on Monday because of a car accident.

A car hit a utility pole, knocking out phone lines in Massena, Waddington and Madrid for several hours, according to Verizon spokesman John J. Bonomo. The time and location of the accident were not available.

Several stores at St. Lawrence Centre mall, Massena, also were affected, with some having to manually enter credit card transactions, according to mall employees.
