Police in NNY accuse several people of DWI

An intoxicated Evans Mills man attempting to make a U-turn near his home Dec. 26 miscalculated and struck a roadside utility pole, according to Jefferson County sheriff's deputies.

David L. Ballou, 47, of 8809 N. Main St., was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and making an unsafe lane change after he struck the pole and continued back to his driveway, deputies said.

Deputies said his blood alcohol content was 0.31 percent, which exceeds the 0.18 percent state threshold for aggravated DWI and nearly quadruples the 0.08 percent threshold for intoxication.

Deputies at the scene said a portion of Mr. Ballou's car, along with fresh tire tracks leading back to the property, led them back to the suspect.

Also charged with driving while intoxicated and related offenses:

■ Nicholas D. Coburn, 26, of 40 Grange Ave., Adams, was arrested at 12:38 a.m. Friday at Samaritan Medical Center.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies said at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Mr. Coburn was heading west on County Route 84 in the town of Adams between County Route 82 and the village of Adams line when his vehicle veered off the road and hit a tree, causing injuries to Mr. Coburn's face, head and hip. South Jefferson Ambulance took him to Samaritan, where police also charged him with speeding. He refused to provide a blood sample to police, they said.

■ Lynn G. Gardner, 54, of 28 Hanks Road, Star Lake, was charged at 5:01 p.m. Dec. 27 at Clifton-Fine Hospital, Star Lake. State police also charged her with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, speeding, failure to produce an insurance identification card and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle.

According to police, Mrs. Gardner was speeding when her vehicle hit a rock about 2:25 p.m. off Tooley Pond Road in the town of Clifton. She was taken to the hospital with knee pains, police said. Blood was drawn to determine her blood alcohol content, police said.

■ Lloyd E. Gibson Sr., 54, Middletown, Conn., was charged by Watertown city police at 12:01 a.m. Dec. 24 in the 600 block of West Main Street. Police said his BAC was 0.14 percent. He also was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, having no insurance, failure to keep right, passing through a red light, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and operating an uninspected vehicle.

■ Robert R. LaRock Jr., 25, of 900A California Road, Gouverneur, also was charged Dec. 24 with refusing a breath test, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, second-degree harassment, making an unsafe start and failure to notify of a change of address after he was stopped on Austin Street, Gouverneur village police said.

■ Michael S. Vasburgh, 28, Utica, was stopped by Watertown police at 1:35 a.m. Monday on Public Square and charged with aggravated DWI. Police said he did not stop at a stoplight at the intersection with Mill Street. His BAC was 0.23 percent, they said. He was held at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building on $250 bail.

■ Anna E. Towles, 21, Black River, was stopped by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies at midnight Dec. 27 on Route 342 in the town of LeRay. Her BAC was 0.15 percent, police said. She additionally was charged with reckless driving, failure to keep right and failure to obey a stop sign.

■ Steven C. Parker, 59, of 300 Baker Road, North Bangor, was charged Dec. 27 with aggravated DWI after he was stopped on County Route 54 in Lawrenceville, St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies said. He registered 0.18 percent BAC, they said.

■ Jason A. Corkins, 38, Ogdensburg, also was charged Tuesday with having no license plate light and failure to register a change of address after he was stopped on Lost Village Road in the town of Oswegatchie, state police said. His BAC wasn't available.

■ Lorena Farina, 33, of 11650 Cardinal Ave., Fort Drum, was stopped at 1:30 a.m. Dec. 27 at 1709 State St. by Watertown police. Her BAC was 0.13 percent, police said. She also was charged with having an improper license plate lamp.

■ Bryan L. Cook, 25, of 829 Alexandria St., Carthage, was charged at 6:53 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of Arsenal Street. City police said he was involved in an accident and failed field sobriety tests. He also was charged with speeding, one count each of first- and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and violation of probation.

■ Glenn D. Caplicki, 24, of 7527 S. State St., Lowville, was charged at 4:24 a.m. Friday after he was stopped by Lewis County sheriff's deputies. His BAC was 0.09 percent, police said. He also was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, an equipment violation and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

■ Bonnie L. Suiter, 52, of 6902 Austin Road, Glenfield, was charged following a one-vehicle rollover accident in which she was injured about 1:47 a.m. Friday.

Lewis County sheriff's deputies said she was traveling south on Pine Grove Road in the town of Watson when she lost control of her vehicle. It traveled west off the roadway, hit a snow embankment and overturned. Ms. Suiter had to be extracted from the vehicle and was taken to Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, with arm and lower back pain. Passenger Jeffrey M. Suiter was not injured.

Ms. Suiter's BAC was unavailable pending blood test results.

■ Joshua S. Gero, 28, Brushton, also was charged Friday with leaving the scene of an accident, drinking alcohol in a car, failure to use designated lane and failure to stop for a stop sign after he hit a mailbox on John Hill Road in the town of Moira, state police said. He registered a 0.16 percent BAC, they said.

■ Vincent J. Waldron, 62, Westville, also was charged Friday with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, consuming alcohol in a car, speeding, failure to stop for a stop sign, having an uninspected car and having unsafe tires after an accident on Patterson Road in the town of Moira, state police said. He registered a 0.16 percent BAC.
