CANTON — A 73-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday in a Vermont hospital after being hit by a car at a Canton crosswalk Saturday evening, according to village police.
Police said Donald E. Adams, 6976 County Route 27, was struck while crossing Main Street near the corner of Riverside Drive at 5:15 p.m. Saturday. He was found lying in the road near the H&R Block and Gray & Gray buildings.
Jamie L. Bennett, age unknown, of 5 Pine Point Drive, Colton, told police she had the green light and didn't see Mr. Adams until he was right in front of her car. She said she slammed on the brakes, but couldn't avoid hitting him.
Two witnesses told police they saw the accident but didn't see the crosswalk and traffic signals at the time.
Mr. Adams was treated at the scene by a bystander, Nicole A. Zeledon, Canton, who is a nurse. Sheriff's deputies also responded to the accident.
Mr. Adams was taken by Canton Rescue Squad to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, and was transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.
The investigation is ongoing.
