CANTON — A Winthrop man was sentenced Monday in St. Lawrence County Court to time served for having sex with an underage girl.
Carl E. Slater Jr., 25, was sentenced to six months in St. Lawrence County jail and 10 years' probation for a felony third-degree rape conviction. He already had served about 210 days in county jail.
He admitted in November to having sex with a 14-year-old girl last January in the town of Lawrence.
The girl's mother gave an emotional victim impact statement that touched upon how the incident had deeply affected her daughter.
"I like to see him sentenced to the maximum," the mother said. "He took my happy child and crushed her spirit."
Judge Jerome J. Richards imposed several conditions upon Slater, including having to find work and a place to live, complete mental health treatment and pay restitution. He was ordered to pay $1,680.38 in restitution at $50 a month starting next month. A sex offender classification hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22. A protection order was issued for the victim.

He admitted having repeated sexual contact with an underage girl between May 2004 and May 2007.
Robert T. Snyder, 31, Helena, was classified a high risk, or Level 3, sex offender after being convicted in September 2006 on a charge of third-degree rape. He's serving two to four years in state prison.
He confessed having sex with a 16-year-old girl in April 2006.
Snyder was already classified a Level 3 sex offender stemming from a March 2005 conviction in County Court on third-degree rape. He admitted having sex with a 16-year-old girl in March 2004.
Brian K. McCottery, 36, of 444 Oswegatchie Trail Road, Oswegatchie, was found guilty by a jury late Friday on two counts of menacing a police officer and resisting arrest.
He was found innocent on charges of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of menacing a police officer. He will be sentenced March 22 and was released under probation supervision.
Troopers responded March 31 to the home on a report of a domestic dispute. Mr. McCottery reportedly wouldn't allow his wife, Misty, to leave the home and later barricaded himself in a bedroom.
He also threatened to shoot with a shotgun anyone who attempted to disarm him.
Mr. McCottery allegedly fired one round into the ceiling during the standoff. He surrendered to authorities about 50 minutes after the first trooper arrived on scene.
In mid-April, prosecutors pulled a plea offer extended to Mr. McCottery in County Court. He was expected to plead guilty to third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The plea agreement called for Mr. McCottery to be placed on interim probation for one year when sentenced. If successful, Mr. McCottery wouldn't receive a state prison sentence.
