A. Jean Carroll dies at 80

Beloved Mother and Retired Marine Midland bank officer A. Jean Carroll, formerly of Watertown and summer resident of Clayton, died Monday afternoon at the home of her sons in Gainesville, Ga. under the care of hospice and her sons at age 80.

Born Aug. 19, 1929, daughter of Paul and Viola Strader, she attended Watertown High School.

Jean worked at the old Red & White grocery before going to work in 1954 for the Northern New York Trust Company, later known as Marine Midland Bank, where she was a teller and branch manager throughout most of the local offices before moving to the position of banking officer at the Washington Street Main Office from where she retired in 1993.

She married Edward W. Carroll, Capt. with the City of Watertown Fire Dept. on Aug. 17, 1965. Mr. Carroll died Dec. 30, 1978.

She enjoyed summers in Clayton on the river and winters in Palm Bay, FL., with her companion of 16 years, Thomas Heaslip, who died Aug. 29, 2004.

Surviving are her son Michael, Gainesville, GA, her adopted son Thomas Fitzpatrick, Gainesville, GA, sister and husband Mary and Luke Wood, Houston, sister and husband Rose and Howard Sprague, Watertown, sister June Timmerman, Houston, brother and wife John and Shirley Strader, Salt Lake City, David and Linda Heaslip, FL, Janie Heaslip, NJ, Marylou and Doug Jeffries, NJ, Annie and Dan Heaslip, MA, and Bruce Heaslip, Syracuse. She is predeceased by her sister Diane Theriault, Calif., and brother Paul "Sonny" Strader, Va.

Calling hours will be Friday, February 5 from 3 pm - 7 pm at the Reed and Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown, NY. A memorial service will be said Saturday, February 6 at 11 am at Reed and Benoit Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in her name to the American Liver Foundation.
