CANTON — Donald A. Doig, 74, of Schoolhouse Road, died February 2, 2010, at his home while under the care of his wife and Hospice and Palliative Care.

Don was born August 29, 1935, in Cooperstown, the oldest son of Arthur B. and Gladys Benson Doig. He graduated from Worcester Central School and SUNY Cobleskill. On June 28, 1959, he married Donna Wessels in Binghamton, NY. He came to Canton in 1961 as the assistant manager of the Grasse River GLF, worked as a salesman for LeBerge & Curtis, Inc. and finished his career in agribusiness as the manager of the Canton branch of Farm Credit. He then started a Gallagher Fencing business, and raised sheep, horses and Belted Galloway cattle.

He was a member of Canton Fire and Rescue, past president of the Canton Jaycees, served on the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Extension, was chair person of the Black River-St. Lawrence Resource Conservation & Development, served on the Ag Advisory Committee at SUNY Canton, and worked for the establishment of an agricultural museum, which has evolved into the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum in Madrid, NY.

Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna Doig; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Martin Carpenter of Baldwinsville, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Shari Doig of Durhamville, NY; six grandchildren, Andrew and Leah Carpenter and Philip, Mariah, Karli and Taylir Doig; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Ruby Doig of Williamsburg, VA; a brother, David of Savannah, NY; several cousins and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Elizabeth Anne Doig.

Funeral will be Saturday, February 6th at 11:00 AM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro officiating. Calling hours will be Friday, from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. A spring interment will take place in Worcester, NY at the convenience of the family.
