CANTON — Hollis C. Shelmidine, 77, of County Route 27, died February 2, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family and Hospice and Palliative Care.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, February 5th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church, Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia as celebrant. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. Burial will be held in the Spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Canton.

Memorial contributions to St. Mary's Church, 66 Court Street, Canton 13617, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam 13676 or to the Richard E. Winters Cancer Treatment Ctr, 3 Lyons Place, Ogdensburg 13690.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Carolyn; one son and daughter-in-law, Gregory J. and Elizabeth Shelmidine of Albuquerque, NM, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lori Anne and Kim Worm of Red Hook, NY, Kate Marie and Johny Enright of Colorado Springs, CO and Nanci Lynn Tichbourne and John Jacobson of Bloomsburg, PA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alan Roger and Judy Shelmidine of Massena, NY, Larry J. and Hope Shelmidine of Port Angeles, WA; one sister, Sue Ann Shelmidine of Mission Viejo, CA; seven grandchildren, Tony, Joe and Caitlin Worm, Sunny and Elyse Shelmidine and Sean and Kaitlyn Enright; and several nieces and nephews.

Born December 25, 1932 in Lorraine, NY son of Hollis C., Sr. and Ruth (Thomas) Shelmidine he graduated Adams High School in 1951, later from Canton A.T.I. in 1954, he then served in the US Navy for two years before finishing his schooling earning his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson College of Technology in 1960.

On November 3, 1956, he married Carolyn Joan Wilder at St. Cecilia Church in Adams with Rev. Harold McCabe as celebrant.

After graduating from Clarkson he worked at Sylvania in Buffalo for seven years. In 1967 the family moved to Canton where Hollis worked at Corning Glass Works as a Process Engineer. Then in 1976 he worked for a short-time for KRAFT Foods and eventually retired from St. Lawrence University in 1994.

Hollis was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Canton and a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He also enjoyed wood working and being in the outdoors. He will also be remembered as a huge Star Trek fan.
